The gauntlet is yellow for Armor and green - the color associated with Armor - is used for the background. The spiked gauntlet connotes the protective strength of the tank armor; the red flash symbolizes the effective striking power of the tank guns.

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 246th tank Battalion on 4 June 1952. It was amended to add a motto on 19 December 1956. It was redesignated for the 246th Armor Regiment on 2 September 1960.
